"Great Horned Owl"

For the lack of a better explanation, this owl seems to be stretching, and in the process appears to raise and flare every feather up on its end simultaneously, making it look a lot heavier. Perhaps it is an effort to look bigger to ward of enemies like crows. A good question for someone familiar with their habits, and a great pose for a painting.
